Summer School “Transversal Competences for future Lawyers”

This is an event of the project of “Modernising European Legal Education”

Together with eight other European partners, the Universities of Belgrade (Serbia), Zagreb (Croatia), Skopje (Northern Macedonia), Cadiz (Spain), Vilnius (Lithuania), Groningen (Netherlands), Regent’s University London (United Kingdom) and the South Eastern European Law School Network, the project “Modernising European Legal Education” from Prof. Dr. Thomas Giegerich, Director of the Europa-Institut will be awarded the grant by the European Union. “We are very pleased that the selection committee found our project application and the idea behind it to be innovative and eligible for funding. Together with our partners, we look forward to the exciting and important work in the next three years”, says Prof. Dr. Thomas Giegerich, head of the project.

The aim of the project is to prepare young law students for the European job market and to equip them with the necessary interdisciplinary and fundamental tools for a digital and diverse future.

The Summer School “Transversal Competences for future Lawyers” is intended to give participants from all partner faculties the opportunity to further their education in the field of transversal competences and thus to sharpen their own profile. The Summer School will take place for 7 days at the University of Cadiz.
The course is designed to broaden the participants’ awareness that, in addition to the necessary legal expertise, further competencies are necessary for sustainable success in today’s labour market. To this end, the Summer School is structured as follows:

Day 1: Introduction to transversal competences, getting to know each other, time and project management.

Key lecture: Transversal competences in Legal Education

Day 2: Case studies

Day 3: Case studies / Clinical Legal Education

Day 4: Clinical Legal Education

Day 5: Moot Courts

Day 6: Moot Courts / Simulation

Day 7: Simulation.

Details of the teaching content will be detailed in the agenda.

The programme reflects the key skills for legal practitioners in the area of transversal competences. The initial theoretical introduction, combined with short practical exercises, put what has been learned into a practical legal context. A special focus is placed on problem solving, decision-making, group work, leadership and other skills.

The addresses of the Summer School are young lecturers who  are interested in further education beyond the necessary legal knowledge. After successful participation, these participants have strengthened their profile to such an extent that they are aware of the importance of transversal competences and are able to formulate them clearly and apply them in specific situations.
Furthermore, the Summer School is also aimed at a limited number of teaching staff who have already participated in the workshop “Train the trainers”. During the Summer School they will have the opportunity to test their developed models of new teaching methods and to get feedback on them.

In addition to the training of participants, as mentioned above, the Summer School is also intended to be a format for developing and testing a possible course on transversal competences. All units will be recorded, edited and made available online depending on the consent of all participants.

The summer school will be evaluated afterwards by sending a questionnaire to all participants. The results will be compiled anonymously by the project coordinator and sent for review to the management board. Critical feedback will be used for adjustments for the future LTT
